Jim Hunt came to the Western Steer in Colum bus Wednesday to announce that he will be announcing his campaign announcement next year. Not knowing all the ins and outs of statecraft, our interpre tation of this turn of phrase is that Hunt is running for the Democratic nomination for governor. You may recall that Lacey Thornburg appears interested as well. Hunt asked the assembled group of Polk County Demo crats whether or not Western North Carolina is better off now than it was six years ago. He cited SAT scores, infant mor tality rates, crime, and the state budget mess as examples of a big comedown for the state. He said his campaign will be (Continued On Back Page) TRYON. N C 28782 Polk Wins Conference Game Rosman dropped two confer ence volleyball games Tuesday at Polk Central High School. The Polk County Wolverine JVs defeated Rosman 15-4 and 15-10. Top servers in the 1st game were Ginger Levister, with 7 pts. and Blythe Edwards with 4. 2nd game Amanda McCallister 5, Ginger Levister 4, Errica Jackson, 4 and for Rosman Sarah Bagwell with 7. The JVs arc now tied for first in the conference. Tlic Varsity team defeated Rosman in three sets 15-8, 15-9, and 15-6. Top servers in the 1st game were Amy Dotson with 9 pts., (R) B. Sitton 4 and (R) A. Bradshaw 4. 2nd. game Blythe Edwards 6, Neysa Cal lahan 3, (R) B. Sitton 3, (R) A. Bradshaw 3. 3rd game Blythe Edwards 7 and Amy Dotson 6. Varsity stats: Blythe Edwards had 6 serving aces; Neysa Cal lahan 4; J. J. Bumgardner 2; Stacey Edwards 2; Tiffany Searcy 2; and Amy Dotson 3. Coach Terrell stated that she was proud of both teams. "These were overall really good games...good serving was a major part of it." The Varsity is tied for second in the confer ence with Edneyville. The team played at home Thursday against Landrum. They will play Chase at Chase on Mon., Sept. 30 at 4:30 p.m. Read The Bulletin For Local News FRIDAY, SEPT. 27,1991 Gary Gibbs Gibbs Performs On Capitol Steps Gary Gibbs, an 8th Grade student at Tryon Middle School, is a member of Crawley's Country Cloggers of Spartanburg. The team recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to perform on the steps of the Capitol Building on the invita tion of Rep. Liz Patterson of S.C. They also visited Sen. Strom Thurmond of S.C. and performed for him at his office. Gary is 13 years old and is the son of Gary and Jeannie Gibbs. He has been clogging for two years. He also has a sister, Car oline, nine years old. Gary also plays on the foot ball and basketball teams and is a member of the Beta Club. He will be performing on Sept. 28, at 12:30 at the Inman Harvest Festival, Inman, S.C. —Community Reporter 20C Per L op' Democrat Women To Hear Mrs. Lacey Thornburg Polk County Democrat Women will have Dottie Thornburg to speak at the Sept, monthly meeting. Mrs. Thorn burg is the wife of Attorney General Lacey Thornburg who is a Democrat candidate for Governor of North Carolina. She is a high school English teacher and a much sought after speaker. The meeting will be on Mon day, Sept. 30th, at 7:30 p.m. at Democrat Headquarters on Ward St., in Columbus. Every body is invited. —Community Reporter Pittman Reunion The annual reunion of the descendants of Rufus and Car rie Bolin Pittman will be held Sunday, Oct. 6th at the Pacolet Hills-Hickory Grove Commu nity Building. Each family is to bring a covered dish for the 1 p.m. dinner. Beverage, ice and tableware will be furnished.
